International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th each year, is a global celebration which shines a light on the achievements of women as well as highlighting issues which affect women. First thought to have been celebrated in 1917, by 1977 it had been picked up and officially endorsed by the UN, and it was at around this time with better organisation, that the celebrations began to centre around a theme.
The theme this year is Gender Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow, and the women being celebrated have all made some contribution to tackling the climate crisis.
All the products featured here come from brands which are making efforts to raise awareness of climate change and help the effort to fight it.
Ariana Grande – Ari
In 2019, Ariana Grande was a major part of the ensemble that brought Lil Dicky’s music video, “Earth”, to life. The “Earth” video was a music-led initiative to raise awareness about climate change.
The Ari fragrance was Grande’s debut scent and was released in 2015. A fruity-floral fragrance, it is sweet, light and exactly what you think Ariana might smell of. Top notes of raspberry, pear and grapefruit give a sweet and zingy opening, which is softened by the mid notes of vanilla, orchid, rose and lily of the valley. The base of musk, marshmallow and woody notes gives the fragrance depth without overpowering the sweetness.
Michael Kors – Gorgeous!
The recent introduction of their “sustainable” badge makes it much easier for shoppers to stay ethical and eco-friendly, and this is just the beginning for Michael Kors. With their parent company making a public commitment to sustainability in 2020, and part of that pledge involving a strategy to be 100% reliant on renewable energy by 2025 makes this step just the first domino in the line.
Released in 2021, Gorgeous! is a floral, woody, musk fragrance. Top notes of pink pepper and mandarin orange give a sweet and light opening, which is quickly tempered by the mid notes of tobacco, jasmine sambac. Orange blossom, tuberose and ylang-ylang give a deep and smoky scent, which is perfectly complemented by the base of guaiac wood, tonka bean, cedar, benzoin, cashmeran, styrax and suede.
Make sure you celebrate International Women’s Day with the people who are celebrating women right alongside you this year, and don’t forget to jeep your eye out for those sustainability logos to help you stay eco-friendly and in keeping with the theme.
