International Women’s Day is fast approaching.
It is a day where we celebrate women and the progress we have made as a society in the fight against gender inequality, but it is also a reminder that the journey is far from complete. While we celebrate this important day, it is worth exploring the roles floral and feminine fragrances play in the lives of women and how those fragrances are an empowering form of self-expression for women in contemporary times.
In honour of women of all cultures and creeds, we have prepared a short article on floral and feminine fragrances and how they represent a celebration of womanhood.
Why Floral Scents Are Considered Feminine
Some scents are traditionally feminine, while others are traditionally masculine. However, that does not mean that people are restricted to scents based on whether they consider themselves one or the other. Scents are highly subjective and will elicit different reactions in different people. There is also a cultural aspect to consider, as the symbols and traditional associations of femininity and masculinity in one culture will not conform to the expectations of another culture.
With the above in mind, it is still interesting to explore why floral scents are predominantly considered feminine in the perfume industry today. Flowers of all kinds have traditionally been associated with conventional feminine traits like beauty and delicacy. In the past, women were expected to be graceful and elegant, much like a budding flower or a blossom in its prime. This association has been reinforced over time, with floral scents being marketed towards women almost exclusively, which in turn drove up demand for such scents once again in a never-ending spiral.
How Fragrances Can Empower Women
Fragrances can be a great form of self expression and can help women feel good about themselves. It is a relatively modest way for a woman to explore her identity without necessarily implementing major changes to the way she looks or behaves, and is thus an empowering tool to help her feel confident, to evoke pleasant memories and feelings, and to serve as a mild mood enhancer. Perfume is not just about making you smell good, but also about making you feel good!
It is important to note that there is nothing wrong with disliking a particular scent or fragrance note. If you are a woman who prefers more woody or fruity scents, there is still a wide range of perfumes available that can cater to your senses. After all, International Women’s Day is about empowerment and self expression, not about waiting for someone else to tell you what to like and what to buy. With that said, a perfume can make a great gift on any occasion (and is also a fabulous way to treat yourself).
