Festival season is finally here, and whether you’re heading to Coachella, Glastonbury, Lost Village, Parklife, or your favourite indie weekender, don’t forget your all-important festival fragrance in the glitter-and-tent packing frenzy. After all, let’s face it, nobody wants to dance the day away smelling funky rather than fresh.

You’ve planned your outfits, stocked up on the SPF, and maybe even bought biodegradable glitter, but let’s be real; chances are your usual 9-5 signature scent isn’t going to cut it when you’re in the middle of a sweaty crowd with a can of cider in hand or dancing the night away in a field. That’s where your festival fragrance game needs to level up with something punchy, lasting, and totally you.

So, What Makes a Great Festival Fragrance?

Festival fragrances are a category in their own right—scents that work for the office or a romantic dinner date won’t survive 12 hours of dancing in a sun-baked field. And two key things you should definitely look for in a truly festival-worthy fragrance are longevity and personality.

Your festival fragrance needs to last all day and well into the night, so it’s no good relying on gorgeous top notes that waft off your skin for the first five minutes and then disappear. The perfect scent is going to need to withstand heat, sweat, the occasional beer shower, and the rain that inevitably comes with The Great British Summer.

Let’s start with the staying power. Ideally, look for Parfum or Eau de Parfum over lighter Eau de Toilettes. And opt for fragrances with rich base notes—think amber, oud, musk, and woods—that cling to skin and evolve beautifully, with the scent actually improving as the day goes on.

Fragrance layering is a key factor here. Start with a matching shower gel or body cream and layer your perfume in over the top—it makes a huge difference to making your scent last longer. Even an unscented moisturiser will give your fragrance something to cling on to. Another top tip is to apply a dab of perfume behind your knees and on your belly—as you move and your body warms up, you release subtle waves of scent throughout the day. It’s sexy, and nobody sees it coming. Genius!

Find Your Vibe

Festivals are all about freedom and self-expression, and your fragrance can reflect that. It’s your moment to go bold, or even a bit weird if that’s what floats your boat. Fragrances with oud, fig, suede, cardamom, saffron or even metallic or salty accords can add some real edge. These are the kinds of scents that stick in people’s memories. “Perfume is more than what’s in the bottle—it’s about the story it tells and the memories it creates”, says our perfume expert, Aude Asklöv.

You’re going to want to bring some energy, so look for notes of citrus, spice, and herbs, or even edgy florals—think fresh citrus paired with something unexpected like basil or cardamom, or surprising unisex blends. For men: think about aromatic fougères or woody citruses like Creed Aventus. For women: white florals with bite, or zesty gourmands - something like Mugler Alien Goddess or Creed White Flowers or Spring Flower.

Match Your Scent to the Festival

Aude suggests letting the location guide your choice by creating a mood board to match your fragrance to the festival’s aesthetic. Boho, minimal, neon rave queen—there’s a perfume for every vibe. If you’re heading to Glastonbury, for example, try something earthy and free-spirited like Bvlgari Terrae Essence. And for a beachside rave in Ibiza, go for solar florals, marine notes, or something like Tom Ford Oud Minerale or Soleil Blanc to bring the heat.

The best festival fragrances aren’t static—they mingle with your skin, change with the heat, and become part of your overall experience. The scent you choose should either blend beautifully with your natural scent as the day goes on or work to camouflage the chaos. Anything too delicate or shy will just get lost, so look for clean but punchy notes like vetiver, neroli, basil, and incense.

Think of your scent as part of your festival outfit. “Fragrance is about memory and mood,” says Aude. “It should feel like you, only amplified.”

And please, for the love of nose gods, don’t overspray in a tent.
