Our awareness of damage from the sun's rays has made sun protection increasingly important to all of us, but with so many different types and strengths to choose from, knowing what’s what and making the right choice for your skin can seem difficult.

This guide will explain the difference between sunscreen and sunblock, what SPF is and give a few high-protection examples from our own range.

Let’s begin with the different names; sun cream/screen/lotion/block. There are really only 2 different types of protection, and the difference between them lies in how they work. Other names usually refer to what they have been combined with or how they should be applied.

Sunblock

Sunblock is usually a thick, white substance, and provides a physical and opaque barrier between the skin and the suns as well as reflecting UV rays. They have a high protection factor and don’t require re-application, which makes them a great choice for children and those who work in the sun for long periods.

Sunscreen

Sun creams, lotions and oils use the same type of product, sunscreens, to protect you. Sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays. They are usually invisible once applied and require reapplication every 2 hours or after swimming for best protection. For summer events where looking good is as important as protecting yourself, these are very popular.

SPF

SPF stands for sun protection factor and gives a rough measurement of how well protected you will be. Put simply, the higher the SPF, the better protected you will be. People with fair or sensitive skin should always aim for a higher SPF where possible.

These are a few of our current sun protection products, along with their SPF, to help you stay safe in the sun.
